What to Expect in the Test
Upon arrival to take the CITB test, simply show your ID to the staff and have your photo taken (for security purposes). When testing begins, you will have 45 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. You will receive your results certificate once you complete the exam.
If you fail the exam, you may register to retake it three days after your first try. We also suggest that you buy reference materials to help you prepare for the retake exam.
You can find revision materials by following this link. We strongly advise that you use these materials, especially if you are retaking the CITB test.
Studying before taking the exam improves your chances of earning a passing score. If you’re ready to retake the exam, click here to fill out our online form.
What to Take With You
You must bring approved identification. If you do not have a valid ID, you cannot take the exam (no exceptions). The most common form of identification is a UK driver’s license or passport.
If you don’t have these forms of identification, you need to provide two alternative forms. These include your EU Country ID card, Trade Union Card, British Armed Forces Card, credit or debit card, National Insurance card, or the latest statements from your bank.
What to Do Before Going to the Test Centre
For the best results, be sure to double-check your test material before arriving.

Which Test Should You Take?
No one is able to obtain a CSCS Card without first sitting for the appropriate level of CITB health, safety and environment test. You must take the appropriate test within 2 years of applying for your CSCS card. If it has been longer than that since you took the test, you will need to be retested before applying for the CSCS card.
The Different CITB Tests
Not all levels of the CITB health, safety and environment test are appropriate for all CSCS cards. Make sure you take the right CITB test in Sheffield for the card you hope to obtain. The three levels of test are:
  • The Operatives Test
  • The Operatives or Specialist Test
  • The Specialist, Managers or Professionals Test
About the Operatives Test
The Operatives Test is for new CSCS card holders - those seeking a Red Card (Provisional) - or for those seeking a Green Card (Labourer). It is the most basic of the CITB tests, but that does not mean it’s easy. Many who have arrived unprepared to take the CITB test in Sheffield have wound up leaving disappointed.  You would do well to engage in serious revision in the period leading up to the test.
Keep in mind too that other prerequisites apply to those who wish for a Green Card. For instance, they must have completed the HSA Level 1 course, or passed the online health safety and awareness course.

About the Operatives or Specialist Test

If you hope to obtain a Blue Card (Skilled Worker), Red Card (either Apprentice, Experienced Worker or Trainee), or a Gold Card you will need to sit for the Operatives or Specialist Test.
This test is a step up in difficulty from the standard Operatives Test meaning that revision in the days leading up to the test is strongly recommended. There are also prerequisites in play for those hoping to obtain one of the above-mentioned cards. So be sure you visit the the CSCS website to find out exactly what those are.

About the Specialist, Managers or Professionals Test

If you hope to obtain a CSCS Black Card (Manager), CSCS Red Card (either Technical, Supervisory or Managers), or CSCS White Card (either Academically Qualified Person or Professionally Qualified Person), will need to sit for the Specialist, Managers or Professionals CITB test.

This is the most involved and difficult CITB test in Sheffield and is designed to ensure that people at the highest levels of the industry are fully qualified to hold the positions they do.
