The CSCS card is a way to verify that people working on construction sites have the appropriate knowledge and training. This helps prevent on-the-job mishaps that endanger everyone's health and safety. You obtain a CSCS card by taking the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. There are 150 CITB test centres nationwide including in Derby.
What to Expect in the Test
When you arrive for your CITB test in Derby, the staff will need to check your ID and verify that you are on the schedule to take the test. A photo of you will then need to be taken for security purposes. The test itself consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and takes 45 minutes. Upon completion, you will receive your test results certificate.
What to Take With You
Please bring a valid ID with you on test day. Without it, you can’t take your CITB test. Valid forms of identification are your UK driving license or passport.
If you don’t have either form of identification, you may present two alternate forms instead. These include a Trade Union card, a British Armed Forces card, EU Country ID card, recent bank statement, National Insurance card, or your credit or debit card. Take The Right TestThere are quite a few types of CSCS Cards that you could try to obtain.
Depending on what type of work you are looking to do in construction, you will need to make sure you hold the right card for your job.
To hold any CSCS Card, you must pass the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test.
There are actually 3 different levels of this test so knowing which one is the right one for you to take can be a bit confusing.
To make sure you take the appropriate test at our Derby Test Centre, here is some information on each of the 3 types of CITB Test.
The Operatives Test
The Operatives Test is the most basic CITB Test and is the test required to be taken for anyone looking to hold a Green Card to work as a Labourer or a Red Card for those looking for temporary access to a construction site.
The Specialist Test
Anyone with special skills looking to work on a construction site will need to pass the Specialist Test.
This is the test for those trying to obtain a Red Card (Trainee, Apprentice, or Experienced Workers), Blue Card (Skilled Workers), or Gold Card (Supervisory).
The Managers or Professionals Test
This is the highest level of CITB Test and is designed for those who will be taking on senior roles on a construction site.
You will need detailed knowledge of your role in order to pass.
This is the test to take if you are looking to obtain a Red Card (Technical, Supervisor, Manager), White Card (Academic or Professional), or a Black Card (Manager).
Tips for Passing Your CITB Test
There is no easy way of passing your CITB Test. However, there are certain things you can do to increase your chances.
Revise properly for your test. You will not be able to guess your way through any of the tests.
Answer every question. Even after revising properly, there will likely be some questions you are not certain of the answer to. All of these tests are multiple-choice so if you are unsure, make an educated guess.
