CSCS Test Information

To get a CSCS Card you must complete a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test known as the CSCS test. The test takes 45 minutes. It is a multiple choice test with 50 questions. You must get 45 out of 50 to pass. The CSCS test can be taken at over 150 test centres nationwide.

Brief directions

Proceed to Town Square. Next to Nationwide Building Society and opposite Boots you will find Southgate House. Pearson Professional Centre can be located on the first floor.
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme was introduced 25 years ago to address the problem of poorly trained and unqualified people on UK construction sites. Without a CSCS card today your chances of working construction in the UK are virtually non-existent. The card is obtained by taking the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test.

What to Expect in the Test

There is no secret to taking the CSCS test. Simply appear at the testing site at the appropriate time, show ID, sit for a security photo and take the test. The test itself is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions and you are given 45 minutes to complete as many as you can.

What to Take With You

Anyone who wishes to take the CSCS test must show an acceptable form of ID. A UK driving license or passport with a photo and signature are preferred. But if you have neither you can still take the test if you show 2 alternative forms of ID.

Alternative IDs include a bank statement with your name and address on it, a British Armed Forces ID, an EU Country ID, and a valid EU passport with a photo and signature. For a full list of alternative IDs click here

What to do Before Going to the Test Centre

70% of all who fail the test neglected to study beforehand. So revision is essential. You’ll find a selection of revision aids here.

How to Determine the Right CSCS Test For You

Choosing the right CSCS test is important as it will have an impact on the type of construction work you will be able to undertake.

There are different types of CSCS cards and the one you ultimately need will be dependent on the type of work you will be doing within the construction industry.

While each CSCS card has its own specific requirements to be met, there is one requirement that all CSCS cards have, and that is you must pass the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test.

There are actually 3 levels of CITB test so you need to make sure you take the correct one, as each level allows you to hold a different type of CSCS card.

The 3 levels of CITB test are:

The Operatives Test
The Specialist Test
The Managers or Professionals Test

The Operatives Test

This is the test you will need to take if you are looking to get a CSCS Red Card (Provisional) or a CSCS Green Card (Labourer).

The Operatives Test is a level 1 test meaning it is the most basic of all the CITB tests. That being said, it is by no means an easy test and you will need to make sure you are fully prepared if you hope to pass first time.

The Specialist Test

The Specialist Test is even more challenging than the Operatives Test. This is the test you will need to take and pass if you are looking to get a Skilled Workers Blue Card. a Red Card for Experienced Workers, Apprentices, or Trainees, and a Gold Card for Supervisors.

You should give yourself plenty of time to revise and prepare for the Specialist Test to give yourself the best chance of passing.

The Managers or Professionals Test

This is the highest level of CITB test and is for those looking to get a CSCS Black Card (Managerial), Red Card (Technical, Supervisory, or Managerial), or White Card (Academic or Professional.

As you can imagine, this test will require a large amount of revision and preparation.
