The CSCS card is a way to verify that people working on construction sites have the appropriate knowledge and training. This helps prevent on-the-job mishaps that endanger everyone's health and safety. You obtain a CSCS card by taking the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. For 25 years the CSCS Card has improved safety on construction sites nationwide. But they’re not free for the asking. To get one you must pass the CITB Test, also known as the CITB Test.
What to Expect in the Test
If you arrive late to the Chatham Test Centre you can expect to be turned away. So be prompt. Once inside your photo will be taken for security purposes. The test will include 50 multiple choice questions and you will have 45 minutes to answer them.
What to Take With You
If you do not have an acceptable form of ID you will be turned away. For most people, this will be a UK driving license or a UK passport.
If you do not have one of those, not to worry. You can still take the test if you can produce 2 alternative forms of ID. Acceptable alternatives include a Proof of Age Card, National Insurance Card and Trade Union Card.

Which Test to TakeAs we said at the start, a prerequisite for obtaining any type of CSCS Card is that you take and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. But there are 3 different types of CITB tests and more than a dozen types of CSCS Cards. So in order to get the card you're after you need to make sure you take the right test. The Operatives Test
You will need to complete the CITB Operatives Test if you are seeking either of the following CSCS Cards:
- CSCS Green Card (Labourer)
- CSCS Red Card (Provisional)
The Specialist Test
The Specialist Test is the next level of CITB Test and must be taken and passed by anyone hoping to obtain one of the following CSCS Cards:
- CSCS Red Card (Trainee, Apprentice or Experienced Worker)
- CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker)
- CSCS Gold Card (Supervisory, Advanced)
The Managers or Professionals Test
If you are seeking a position as a construction manager or supervisor, or you have a particular academic or professional qualification and would like to work in the construction industry, you will need to take the Managers or Professionals Test for any of the following cards:
- CSCS Red Card (Technical, Supervisor, Managers)
- CSCS White Card (Academically or Professionally Qualified Person)
- CSCS Black Card (Manager)
