Earn the degree-equivalent qualification that defines a serious health and safety career — 85% first-time pass rate, 92% average pass mark, and the academic route into Graduate and Chartered IOSH membership.
This course delivers the official NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals — the most advanced qualification in NEBOSH's national portfolio and the academic equivalent of a UK bachelor's degree with honours. It is the credential that senior HSE practitioners, safety managers, consultants and aspiring Chartered Members of IOSH need to demonstrate degree-level competence in occupational health and safety.
Now regulated by Ofqual and sitting at Level 6 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, the Diploma is recognised by employers, professional bodies and educational institutions in more than 180 countries. Successful completion meets the academic requirements for Graduate IOSH Membership (Grad IOSH) — the first step on the route to becoming a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH).
The qualification is built around three substantial units, each tackling a major area of health and safety management. Assessment is by one workplace assignment and two case studies, all submitted electronically — there are no traditional written exams.
Across its three units, the qualification covers:
This qualification is built for serious HSE professionals — health and safety managers, advisors, consultants, senior officers, and anyone aiming for Chartered status. It is also suited to engineers, operations managers and senior leaders who need degree-level safety expertise to move into specialist or executive HSE roles. There is no formal entry requirement, but NEBOSH strongly recommends learners hold the NEBOSH General Certificate or have at least five years of relevant industry experience before starting.
Not a university degree, but the academic equivalent. The qualification sits at Level 6 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework — the same level as a UK bachelor's degree with honours — and is widely accepted as degree-equivalent by employers and professional bodies. It does not carry the title 'BSc' or 'BA', but the academic standard is comparable.
Approximately 415 hours of total study, typically spread over 12–18 months. Online and Distance learners get 3 years of course access from enrolment, and you have up to 5 years from enrolment to complete all three assessments. Virtual and Classroom learners are taught across 6 split weeks (30 working days) plus assessment preparation. Most working professionals study around full-time roles.
Yes. The Diploma is fully available online, with on-demand, self-paced learning. You can also study individual units online to spread the cost and pace. Other options include Distance learning, Virtual classroom (live and tutor-led), in-person Classroom across UK sites, and on-site corporate delivery.
Assessment is by three written pieces of work — no closed-book exams. DN1 is a workplace assignment of approximately 40 hours of effort. DN2 and DN3 are case studies, each approximately 20 hours of effort. All three are submitted electronically through the NEBOSH exam portal with a set submission deadline of 2–4 weeks per assessment. You must pass all three units to achieve the full qualification.
Both qualifications are equal in level and rigour, but the syllabus differs. The Level 6 National Diploma covers UK health and safety law and is best suited to learners working under UK regulation. The Level 6 International Diploma covers international standards and is suited to learners working in other jurisdictions or for international employers.
On successful completion you can apply for Graduate IOSH Membership (Grad IOSH), the entry point to chartered status. From there, completing a Skills Development Portfolio and a peer review interview opens the route to Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH). Diploma holders also qualify for membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and gain access to NEBOSH's exclusive networking events, biannual HSE journal and ongoing CPD opportunities.
Yes. The qualification is recognised by employers, educational institutions and professional bodies in more than 180 countries. In the UK it is the academic benchmark for senior HSE roles, and international employers regularly cite it as the preferred Diploma-level credential.
