What to expect from the NVQ

Yes, you must be working in a relevant role to complete your Level 2 NVQ in Industrial Painting. Since this qualification is assessed in a real workplace environment, it’s essential that you’re already active in industrial painting occupations or decorative finishing work.

Not sure if your job qualifies? If your day-to-day tasks include preparing surfaces, applying coatings, or using techniques like the airless spray method, then you’re likely in the right place. We’ll help confirm your role is suitable during the registration process.

To achieve the full NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations – Industrial Painter, you’ll need to complete at least 7 units. These include:

  • 6 mandatory units covering key tasks like preparing surfaces for painting, applying paint systems, and following general health, safety and welfare procedures
  • 1 optional unit, which may involve more specialist skills such as applying complex stencils, producing textured finishes, or abrasive blast cleaning

Your assessor will help guide you through which mandatory units and additional units apply based on your daily work. All units are based on national occupational standards, ensuring your qualification meets the expectations of the construction industry.

We keep it simple. If you’re already involved in industrial painting, then your current job can provide most of the proof you’ll need. Tasks like applying coatings, storing resources, working with pre cut stencil plates, or handling decorative mouldings are all valid.

We accept a wide range of evidence—from photos and videos of you working, to signed documents and witness testimonies. Your professional discussions with your assessor also count, allowing you to demonstrate your skills and meet the assessment criteria without written exams or foundation papers.

Absolutely. The qualification title is fully approved and recognised across the UK. Completing this NVQ shows that you’ve met all required standards for productive working practices, dismantling access working platforms, and even operating equipment to support the paint sprayer.

Once you’ve finished, you’ll receive your Level 2 NVQ Diploma, which allows you to apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card. This opens up more job opportunities within the construction industry and confirms your competence to employers across a range of sites.

Once you’ve successfully completed your Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations, you’ll receive a certificate approved by CITB and recognised across the construction industry.

At this stage, you’ll be eligible to apply for your Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card, provided you’ve also passed your CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. If you’re not sure which standard and foundation papers you need to revise, or how to book your test, our team can guide you every step of the way.

Finishing your qualification shows that you meet all required national occupational standards, and helps you take the next step in your career, whether that means moving into a senior role, leading a team, or specialising in new techniques like air spray method or applying complex stencils.
