What to expect from the NVQ

To successfully complete the Level 2 NVQ in Structural Concreting, candidates must achieve a minimum of six units. This qualification structure includes five mandatory units covering essential civil engineering operations, and at least one optional unit depending on your site experience and daily tasks.

  • The mandatory units are focused on core skills like applying construction related materials, operating powered units, and following productive working practices in the construction and civil engineering sector.
  • Optional units can include specific skills such as exposing buried utility services, removing temporary excavation support, or compacting concrete using pedestrian plant like forward tipping dumpers or ride-on rollers.

This NVQ pathway enables you to build competence in real workplace environments while demonstrating a solid understanding of underpinning knowledge and practical application.
Our qualified assessors will help you identify the right unit combination that reflects your actual role within construction or civil engineering operations.

The NVQ Level 2 in Structural Concreting is designed for those already working in construction and civil engineering operations sectors. This qualification cannot be completed in a simulated setting. All assessments and evidence gathering must be based on live site work.

Your current job must involve tasks like workplace installing, applying and discharging materials, shaping construction related materials, or operating powered units. Because this qualification is built around real-world tasks, you must be employed in the construction industry to begin.

This ensures you meet the national occupational standards for structural concreting and civil engineering operations construction.

This NVQ isn’t just a box-ticking exercise. It’s about showing us you can carry out construction operations competently and consistently. From mixing construction related materials to safely operating ride-on rollers or compacting concrete around sub structures, we want to see you perform to the expected industry level.

You’ll work with a dedicated qualified assessor who understands your trade. Together, you’ll gather evidence through witness testimony, workplace documents, and photo or video proof of your site work. The assessment process also includes professional discussion and reflective accounts where necessary.

This method ensures your NVQ diploma in construction isn’t just earned, it’s proven through real ability and practical results. We align everything with current health and safety expectations, proper use of safety equipment, and productive working practices in civil engineering.

Once you’ve completed your NVQ Level 2 in Structural Concreting, a wider range of job opportunities becomes available. Many of our learners move into more specialised areas of civil engineering operations structural work or go on to supervisory roles.

You may also progress to higher qualifications or apply for your CSCS card if not already held. The skills and knowledge you gain here—such as storing resources, distributing concrete, or managing temporary works—are recognised across the UK construction industry.

This qualification opens doors. Whether you’re looking to advance within your current company or explore new paths in construction and civil engineering, your NVQ is a strong foundation built on real, transferable practical skills.
