The CSCS card is a way to verify that people working on construction sites have the appropriate knowledge and training. This helps prevent on-the-job mishaps that endanger everyone's health and safety. You obtain a CSCS card by taking the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. What Is A CITB Test?A CITB test is a name that is commonly used when talking about the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test. The reason the CITB test is used instead of its official name is because it is the test you need to take in order to obtain a CSCS card.
The CITB Test actually has 3 different levels that you can take. The level you need to sit will depend on the type of CSCS card you are looking to get.
Knowing which test to take can be confusing but this simple guide should help you work out which one is right for you.
The Operatives Test
The Operatives Test is the most commonly taken CITB test as it covers the majority of roles that people hold in the construction industry.
CSCS Cards that can be obtained with the Operatives Test: CSCS Green Card (Labourer), CSCS Red Card (Provisional).
The Specialists Test
This is the second level of the CITB test and goes into more detail than the Operatives Test.
CSCS Cards that can be obtained with the Specialists Test: CSCS Red Card (Trainee, Apprentice or Experienced Worker), CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker) or CSCS Gold Card (Supervisory or Advanced).
The Managers or Professionals Test
The Managers or Professionals Test is the highest level you can take. It requires a great deal of knowledge to pass so it is best suited to experienced construction workers who are looking to hold senior roles.
CSCS Cards that can be obtained with the Managers or Professionals Test: CSCS Red Card (Technical, Supervisor or Managers), CSCS White Card (Academic or Professionally Qualified Person), CSCS Black Card (Manager).
Passing Your CITB Test
Whichever CITB test you take, they are all challenging and you will need to prepare before heading to the test centre in Watford. In our experience, the most common reason for not passing is lack of preparation. To pass your CITB test, you will need to achieve a score of 45 out of 50 correct answers. This can only be done if you prepare properly for the test. Holding a CSCS card can be extremely beneficial for your career so you should take the test seriously.
