Is the CITB Health Safety & Environment test difficult?

Whether or not a person finds it difficult usually comes down to two things: 1) do they have any previous experience performing roadworks in the UK and 2) did they study adequately before taking the test? Unfortunately, many people arrive to take the CITB HS&E test convinced they will nail it without any preparation and wind up failing. Don't let that happen to you. Study in the days leading up to the test.

Do I need to have a construction job lined up before I take the CITB HS&E test?

No, you do not have to have a construction job lined up to take the HS&E test. You can take the test for whatever reason you like, including just wanting to have the option to seek roadwork at some point in the future. Whether you use your certification and CSCS card right away or not will not in any way affect the validity of the card.

What happens if I fail the HS&E test?

In the event you fail the CITB HS&E test you can register to take it again after waiting 48 hours. Keep in mind though that you will need to pay the registration fee again. We would add the following word of caution: If you fail the test it is in your interest to take as long as necessary to undergo revision until you are certain you have mastered the material. Only then should you re-register. Otherwise, you will likely be setting yourself up to fail again.

When does the CITB test result expire?

Technically, there is no expiry date on your HS&E test results. That said, when you apply for a new skills card, or go to renew your current skills card, they will probably check to ensure you took the CITB HS&E test within the previous 2 years. If you took the test much longer ago than that you may not be allowed to get a new skills card or renew your current one until you retake the HS&E test.
