The CSCS card is a way to verify that people working on construction sites have the appropriate knowledge and training. This helps prevent on-the-job mishaps that endanger everyone's health and safety. You obtain a CSCS card by taking the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. There are 150 CITB test centres nationwide including in Edinburgh.
What to Expect in the Test
When you arrive, the staff on hand will check your ID, verify you are scheduled to take the test at that time, and then take a photo of you for security purposes. The test itself will take 45 minutes and will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions. When you finish you will be given your result certificate.
What to Take With You
The most important thing to take with you is an acceptable form of identification. No ID, no test. No exceptions. Valid IDs include a UK driving license or passport.
If you do not have one of those you will need to show 2 alternative forms of ID. These include an EU Country ID card, a Trade Union card, a British Armed Forces card, a credit or debit card, a National Insurance card or a recent bank statement. For a full list of alternative IDs

What to do Before Going to the Test Centre
It is strongly suggested that you spend time revising before going for your test. Of candidates who fail the test nearly 3/4 failed to revise before taking the test.

A Brief Look at the Different CITB Tests
No CSCS Cards will be issued in Edinburgh to anyone who has not taken the CITB HS&E Test. But there are 3 different levels of CITB test and more than a dozen different CSCS Cards. So which test goes with which card? Below we will take a look at the different tests and which CSCS Cards they apply to.
As of this writing there are 3 different levels of CITB HS&E Test, they are:
- The Operatives Test
- The Specialist Test
- The Managers or Professionals Test
Now let’s have a closer look at the 3 tests and the CSCS Cards they apply to.
The Operatives Test Edinburgh
If you wish to obtain a CSCS Green Card in order to work as a labourer on UK construction sites, or you wish to obtain a Provisional CSCS Red Card in order to work temporarily on UK construction sites for academic or professional reasons, you will need to take the Operatives Test.
Above we provided a link to some high-quality revision materials. We would urge you to take advantage of them and spend time preparing for the test in the days and weeks leading up to it.
The Specialist Test Edinburgh
The Specialist Test represents the next level of difficulty as far as CITB Tests are concerned. You will need to take this test if you wish to obtain a Blue Card for Skilled Workers, a Red Card for an Apprentice, Experienced Worker or Trainee, or a Gold Card for a Supervisor. Again, we would strongly urge you to pick up some revision aids and study ahead of time.
The Managers or Professionals Test Edinburgh
The top-level CITB Test is the Managers or Professionals Test. Take this test if you want to obtain a Red Card for Technical, Supervisory or Managerial purposes, a White Card for Academically or Professionally qualified persons, or a Black Card for Construction Managers.
