What to Expect in the Test
When your exam day arrives, you will need to show the staff your ID, and they will make sure you are scheduled to take the exam. You will then be asked to sit down to take a quick photo for security purposes.
You have 45 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. At the end, you will receive your certificate of results.
If you fail the exam, you can register for the next exam three days after the first exam. We also recommend that you purchase our revision materials in order to prepare to retake the exam.
Revision material can be found at this link. It is highly recommended that you use these materials, especially if you fail the first time. Doing so significantly increases the likelihood of achieving a passing score.
If you need to register to retake the exam, you can do so here. Simply provide the requested information to re-apply.
What to Take With You
The most important thing to take with you to your CITB exam is a valid ID. If you do not have one, you won’t be able to take the test. The most common forms of valid ID are a UK driver’s license or passport.
If you don’t have either of these forms of identification, you will need to bring two alternative forms of identification with you on the day of the exam. These include your British Armed Forces ID, EU Country ID, Trade Union card, recent bank statement, debit or credit card, or a National Insurance card.
For a full list of approved IDs, you can find more information by following this link.
What to Do Before Going to the Test Centre

Tips That May Help You Pass Your Test
Tip 1: Do not underestimate the test - This is especially true of the Operatives Test. Many assume this test is easy and do not study. They then fail the test and have to do it over if they want to get their card. Don’t let that happen to you. Study before showing up at the Middlesbrough test centre.
Tip 2: Do not waste time on one question - If you can’t come up with an answer to a particular question in a minute, move on. Don’t waste 5 or 10 minutes agonising over it. Go back to it just before time expires and take a guess regarding the answer.
Tip 3: Get to know the software - You’ll be given an opportunity before the test starts to familiarise yourself with the software used on the test. Make the most of this opportunity, and if you have any questions bring them up before the test starts.
Tip 4: Do not leave any questions unanswered - If you don’t know but take a guess with a multiple choice question you have a 20-25% chance of getting it right. If you leave it blank you have zero chance of getting it right.
Most people who fail do so because they assumed the test was easy so they did not prepare. Don’t fall for that trap. Get some revision aids and use them.
About the 3 CITB Tests
As of this writing, there are 3 different CITB tests given for CSCS Cards. They are:
  • The Operatives Test - This is the most basic test. Take this test if you hope to get a CSCS Green Card (Labourer) or a CSCS Red Card (Provisional).
  • The Specialist Test - This test administered to craftspeople like Plumbers and Electricians. People with special skills who want a Red Card, Blue Card or Supervisory Gold Card take this test.
  • The Managers and Professionals Test - The highest level CITB Test is intended for high-level workers in the construction industry. Take this test if you want a Red Card (Technical, Supervisor, Managers), White Card (Academically or Professionally Qualified Person) or Black Card (Manager).

How much does it cost to take the CITB HS&E test?
The cost of taking the CITB HS&E test is £22.50. However, be mindful of the possibility that the test centre may add administrative costs to the total. If they do, they are legally compelled to provide you with a clear breakdown of all costs.

Is the CITB Health Safety & Environment test difficult?
That will depend almost entirely on how thoroughly a person has prepared before showing up for their test. Remember, there are 50 questions involved and you must answer 45 of those questions correctly in order to pass and be issued a CSCS card. So do yourself a favour and make sure you engage in thorough revision before showing up to take the test.

Do I need to prove I have a construction job to take the HS&E test?
No. There is no need to prove you have a construction job or that you have been offered a construction job. Anyone who wishes to take the CITB Health Safety & Environment test at the CITB Test Centre in Middlesborough is welcome to do so as long as they register and pay the requisite fee.

Do I have to take the HS&E test in order to obtain a CSCS card?
Yes. In order to obtain a CSCS card you will need to take and pass the Health Safety & Environment test. There is no getting around this requirement so people should not waste their time trying to find a loophole.

What happens if I take the wrong CITB test?
You won't. When you appear at the Middlesbrough CITB test centre you will be screened by staff members who will ensure you are in the right place for the right test at the right time.

When does the CITB test result expire?
Technically there is no expiration date. However, should you try to get a new skills card or renew an existing one, the test centre staff may check to see how long ago you took the HS&E test. If it was more than two years you may be asked to take it again.
