The CSCS card is a way to verify that people working on construction sites have the appropriate knowledge and training. This helps prevent on-the-job mishaps that endanger everyone's health and safety. You obtain a CSCS card by taking the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. There are 150 CITB test centres nationwide including in Grimsby.
What to Expect in the Test
When you arrive, the staff on hand will check your ID, verify you are scheduled to take the test at that time, and then take a photo of you for security purposes. The test itself will take 45 minutes and will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions. When you finish you will be given your result certificate.
What to Take With You
The most important thing to take with you is an acceptable form of identification. No ID, no test. No exceptions. Valid IDs include a UK driving license or passport.
If you do not have one of those you will need to show 2 alternative forms of ID. These include an EU Country ID card, a Trade Union card, a British Armed Forces card, a credit or debit card, a National Insurance card or a recent bank statement. For a full list of alternative IDs

What to do Before Going to the Test Centre
It is strongly suggested that you spend time revising before going for your test. Of candidates who fail the test nearly 3/4 failed to revise before taking the test.

Which Test Do You Need to Sit?
Do you know which CITB test you need to take? It can be confusing when you first start out in the UK construction industry, so read on, and we will help sort out the confusion for you!
No matter which card you need for your type of work, you will need to do a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, BUT there are three of them. Make sure you do the right one for the card you are applying for!
The three tests are:
- The Operatives Test
- The Specialist Test
- The Managers and Professionals test
For Red (provisional) and Green (labourer) cards, you need to do the Operatives CITB test.
For Red (Trainees, apprentice or experienced worker) Blue (Skilled worker) or Gold (supervisory or advanced worker) cards, you will need to do the Specialist CITB test.
And for Red (Technical, Supervisor or Manager) or White (Academic or professional qualifications) or Black (Manager) cards, you will need to do the Managers or Professionals CITB test.
Some Advice for Getting the Result You Want
Many people assume the operatives test will be easy, but that is far from the reality. Please revise for it as well as you can so that you pass it the first time and get the card you need to start working straight away.
Grab some high-quality revision materials and spend the time needed to study for this test. Don’t arrive unprepared.
You will have a chance to try out the testing system before you start and ask any questions. It’s a good idea to take advantage of these opportunities to be qualified and on your construction site ASAP.
The questions are multi-choice, and done on a touch screen, so you don’t need to worry about your handwriting.
You will have 45 minutes to complete 50 multi-test questions. If you are unsure of an answer, keep going and return to it when you’ve done all the others. But do answer every question with something to give yourself the highest chance of success.
Best of luck. See you at our testing centre soon!
