CSCS Test Information

To get a CSCS Card you must complete a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test known as the CSCS test. The test takes 45 minutes. It is a multiple choice test with 50 questions. You must get 45 out of 50 to pass. The CSCS test can be taken at over 150 test centres nationwide.

Brief directions

Walk down City Road from Chester Railway Station. After crossing the canal bridge take the steps down to the canal tow path. Go under the bridge and follow the path. The Test Centre is 150 yards on the left.
The CSCS card is a way to verify that people working on construction sites have the appropriate knowledge and training. This helps prevent on-the-job mishaps that endanger everyone's health and safety. You obtain a CSCS card by taking the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test. There are 150 CSCS test centres nationwide including in Chester.

The CSCS Card has enhanced safety on construction sites across the UK. If you don’t have one it will be difficult to find work in the construction industry. To obtain a CSCS Card you must pass a test that demonstrates your knowledge of health and safety issues.
What to Expect in the Test
When you arrive at the Chester Test Centre expect to have your photo taken for security purposes. After a brief wait, the CSCS Test will commence and you will have 45 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions.
What to Take With You
You will not need a pencil, but you will need an acceptable form of identification, typically a UK driving license or passport with photo and signature.
If you don’t have either one you will still be able to take the CSCS Test if you can show 2 alternative forms of ID. Acceptable alternatives include a credit or debit card, a bank statement, or a British Armed Forces ID. See a complete list of alternative IDs here.

CSCS Cards
If you are trying to find work in the UK construction industry, the chances are you would have heard about CSCS cards. Some explanations can make them sound quite confusing but, in simple terms, they are proof that the cardholder has passed the relevant test and has been deemed safe to work on-site.
The test that all CSCS cardholders have to pass is the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test. This is the test people are referring to when they say CSCS test. The CITB test actually covers 3 different levels - all of which can be taken at our Chester Test Centre. The 3 levels are:
  • The Operatives Test
  • The Specialists Test
  • The Managers or Professionals Test
The type of work you want to do will help you decide which level you need to take. For example, the Operatives Test is appropriate for those looking to do general labouring, whereas the Specialists Test is for those who will be working in a specialist role such as an electrician or plumber. The Managers and Professionals Test is the top level of the CITB test and is for construction workers who will take on senior positions within the industry.
It’s worth mentioning that a CSCS card is not a legal requirement so it is optional as to whether you decide to hold one or not. However, most construction companies will only accept workers who hold the relevant CSCS card. With that in mind, your opportunities for work are greatly increased if you have the right card.
A Quick Guide to Find the Right Test to Take
To help you find the right test to take, we have come up with a very simple guide.
Operatives Test - CSCS Green Card (Labourer) or a CSCS Red Card (Provisional)
Specialists Test - CSCS Red Card (Trainee, Apprentice or Experienced Worker), CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker) or CSCS Gold Card (Supervisory or Advanced)
Managers or Professionals Test - CSCS Red Card (Technical, Supervisor or Managers), CSCS White Card (Academically or Professionally Qualified Person), or CSCS Black Card (Manager)
If you are still unsure which the right test is for you, speaking to your site supervisor can be helpful.
