£140m Investment for Home Building Hubs, Training & Jobs

02. 01. 2025.

To address the housing crisis and skills shortage, the UK government, CITB, and NHBC are funding 32 innovative Home Building Hubs. These hubs aim to rapidly train a skilled workforce, supporting the construction of 1.5 million new homes and creating thousands of job opportunities annually.

£140 Million Committed to Developing 32 Fast-Track Home Building Hubs

The UK government has set an ambitious target to build 1.5 million new homes. However, a critical shortage of skilled workers threatens this goal. To address the issue, £140 million will fund the creation of 32 Home Building Hubs, designed to fast-track training and equip a new generation of construction professionals.

Where Is the Investment Coming From?

Alongside the government, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the National House Building Council (NHBC) are leading this initiative, contributing to the £140 million investment. These organisations aim to accelerate workforce training by 25–45% compared to traditional methods, ensuring the industry can meet housing demands.
With a goal to generate 5,000 new apprenticeships and jobs annually, the programme plans to have all 32 hubs fully operational by 2027.

What Will Happen at the Hubs?

The Home Building Hubs will focus on training workers in essential trades such as groundwork, on-site carpentry, and bricklaying—areas identified as having critical skills shortages. Government projections estimate that an additional 26,000 workers are needed to meet housing targets.

Each hub will offer hands-on, practical training in environments designed to mirror real-world construction conditions. Facilities include:

Classrooms for theoretical instruction.

Welfare and catering spaces to support trainees. Participants will practise on concrete slabs and finish large projects for up to six hours each day in outdoor construction settings. These hubs are designed to adjust to shifting laws and changing housing requirements, guaranteeing that their instruction remains current and efficient.

A Collaborative Effort

Tim Balcon, Chief Executive of CITB, highlighted the programme’s innovative approach to training:

“It is clear that we need to rethink how we train our workforce and be much more agile in our approach. We have worked closely with the homebuilding industry and government to develop a programme that equips individuals with the skills they need to be productive on-site in the most efficient way. This is truly a collaborative effort, and one we are very excited about.”

A Move in the Right Direction to Fill the Skills Gap An important step in tackling the housing and workforce issues facing the UK is the establishment of these 32 Home Building Hubs. The program makes sure that people are prepared for the workforce right away by bridging the gap between education and employment. In addition to advancing the government's housing goals, this program creates a steady supply of qualified workers who can satisfy the demands of a developing sector.
