£140m Investment for Home Building Hubs, Training & Jobs

02. 01. 2025.

To address the housing crisis and skills shortage, the UK government, CITB, and NHBC are funding 32 innovative Home Building Hubs. These hubs aim to rapidly train a skilled workforce, supporting the construction of 1.5 million new homes and creating thousands of job opportunities annually.

£140 Million Invested In 32 Fast-Track Home Building Hubs

The UK government has committed to an ambitious target of building 1.5 million new homes. However, a major shortage of skilled construction workers continues to threaten these plans.

To help address the growing skills gap, £140 million will be invested into the creation of 32 Home Building Hubs across the UK. These hubs are designed to fast-track construction training and prepare a new generation of skilled workers for the housebuilding sector.

Who Is Funding The Home Building Hubs?

The initiative is being supported by the UK government alongside contributions from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the National House Building Council (NHBC).

The programme aims to speed up workforce training by approximately 25% to 45% compared to traditional construction training methods.

By 2027, all 32 Home Building Hubs are expected to be fully operational, with a target of creating:

  • 5,000 new apprenticeships each year
  • Thousands of additional construction jobs annually
  • A stronger pipeline of skilled construction workers

What Training Will Be Provided At The Home Building Hubs?

The hubs will focus on practical training for trades currently experiencing major skills shortages within the construction industry.

Key training areas will include:

  • Groundworks
  • Bricklaying
  • On-site carpentry

Government estimates suggest that an additional 26,000 workers are needed to help meet UK housing targets.

Hands-On Construction Training

Each Home Building Hub will provide practical, site-based learning environments designed to replicate real construction conditions.

Training facilities will include:

  • Classrooms for theoretical learning
  • Concrete slab training areas
  • Outdoor construction environments
  • Welfare and catering facilities for trainees

Trainees will spend up to six hours per day working on large-scale practical projects to develop real-world construction skills.

The programme is also designed to adapt to changing legislation and evolving housing requirements, ensuring that training remains relevant to modern construction standards.

A Collaborative Approach To Construction Training

Tim Balcon, Chief Executive of CITB, highlighted the importance of improving and modernising construction training methods:

“It is clear that we need to rethink how we train our workforce and be much more agile in our approach. We have worked closely with the homebuilding industry and government to develop a programme that equips individuals with the skills they need to be productive on-site in the most efficient way. This is truly a collaborative effort, and one we are very excited about.”

Helping To Close The Construction Skills Gap

The introduction of the 32 Home Building Hubs represents a significant step towards tackling both the UK housing shortage and the ongoing construction skills gap.

By bridging the gap between education and employment, the programme aims to ensure trainees are prepared for work immediately upon completing their training.

Alongside supporting the government’s housing targets, the initiative will help create a sustainable supply of qualified construction workers capable of meeting the demands of a growing industry.
