About the CSCS White Card

Not everyone in the construction industry operates heavy machinery or does manual labour. Some play an equally important background role lending their academic or professional expertise to ensure the project is completed safely and properly. In order for these people to operate on construction sites, they should have a CSCS White Card and they get that by taking the CITB Test for the CSCS White Card.

There are 2 kinds of CSCS White Cards: the Academically Qualified Person Card, and the Professionally Qualified Person Card both are explained below.

CSCS White Card - Academically Qualified Person

The Academically Qualified Person White Card is given to the person who has proven academic expertise in a construction-related field of study. Acceptable qualifications include:
  • A 4 year Degree
  • An HND or HNC
  • A CIOB certificate
  • A National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) diploma
This card is valid for 5 years after which time it can be renewed.
CSCS White Card - Professionally Qualified Person
CSCS White Card - Professionally Qualified Person
To obtain a CSCS Professionally Qualified Person White Card you will need to be able to prove membership in a CSCS-approved professional body such as the Royal Institution of British Architects or the Chartered Institute of Building or the Institution of Civil Engineers. The card is valid for a period of 5 years. While it cannot be renewed, you can apply for a new one after that time. This is to ensure you have maintained your membership in good standing with the professional body.

In order to obtain either type of CSCS White Card you will not only need to meet the above laid-out criteria, you will also have to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Specialist, Managers or Professionals Test. This is a mandatory requirement.

The test itself is 45 minutes and consists of 50 multiple choice questions with a number of them dealing specifically with topics an academic or professional in the construction industry would need to know about. Candidates are given 45 minutes to complete the test. Keep in mind too that if you need to renew your CSCS White Card you will need to pass the test before your application for the card can be submitted to CSCS.

Some people obtained Construction Related Occupation (CRO) Cards before they were phased out and wonder whether they can just renew them instead of getting the CSCS White Card. The short answer is they cannot. The last of the CRO Cards will expire at the end of 2022. After that, the programme will be permanently mothballed and people holding CRO Cards will need to apply for an equivalent CSCS Card.
