What to Expect in the Test
When you arrive, the staff on hand will check your ID, verify you are scheduled to take the test at that time, and then take a photo of you for security purposes. The test itself will take 45 minutes and will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions. When you finish, you will receive your result certificate.
If you fail the exam, you can register for the next exam three days after the first exam. We also recommend that you purchase our revision materials to prepare to retake the exam.
Revision material can be found at this link. It is highly recommended that you use these materials, especially if you fail the first time. Doing so increases the likelihood of achieving a passing score.
If you need to register to retake the exam, you can do so here. Simply provide the requested information to re-apply.
What to Take With You
The most important thing to take with you is an acceptable form of identification. No ID, no test. No exceptions. Valid IDs include your UK driving license or passport.
If you do not have one of those, you will need to show 2 alternative forms of ID. These include an EU Country ID card, a Trade Union card, a British Armed Forces card, a credit or debit card, a National Insurance card, or a recent bank statement. For a full list of approved IDs, you can find more information by following this link.

The Tests on Offer
There are three main tests on offer. It may be worth you spending some time with your site supervisor to ascertain which one is best suited for you. The information below may help:
  • The first test on offer is The Operatives Test. This is, on paper, the simplest of the tests available – but this doesn’t mean it’s easy and it should not be underestimated. This is the test you’re looking for if you want to obtain a CSCS Green Card (Labourer) or a CSCS Red Card (Provisional)
  • The second test on offer is The Specialists Test. This is for people working within more specialist trades – such as plumbing and pipefitting. This will help you obtain a CSCS Red Card (Trainee, Apprentice or Experienced Worker), CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker) or CSCS Gold Card (Supervisory or Advanced)
  • Last but not least is The Managers or Professionals Test. This is the most complex of the three tests and is what you need to take if you want to obtain a CSCS Red Card (Technical, Supervisor or Managers), a CSCS White Card (Academically or Professionally Qualified Person) or a CSCS Black Card (Manager)
Maximising Your Chances of Success
It’s vitally important that you do not underestimate these tests – as many people have done before you. By taking time to revise and prepare properly, and by being smart about how you handle things on test day, you can give yourself the best chance of coming away with a CSCS Card.
Here are our top tips for success:
  • Answer every question in the test – even if you aren't totally sure of the answer. This is especially relevant on multiple-choice questions where, even with a guess, you have a 20-25 percent chance of getting it right. Leaving it blank gives you 0 percent chance.
  • Don’t spend too long on questions you are struggling with – this is advice that comes straight from school. Move on to the next question and save the tougher ones until last, when you can at least make an educated guess if you still can’t work it out.
  • Do your revision – we highly recommend you source some good quality revision materials and take the time to go through them – otherwise, you risk failing the test and losing out on both money and opportunities.
These tests are not easy – preparation is absolutely key if you want to succeed.
