What to Expect in the Test
The exam day is simple and straightforward. On arrival, simply show your ID to the staff and take your photo (for security). After the exam starts, you are given 45 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. Once completed, you will receive your certificate of results.
If you fail the exam, you can register for the next exam three days after the first exam. We also recommend that you purchase exam material to help you prepare for the retake. You can find review material by following this link
It is highly recommended that you use these materials, especially if you fail the first time. This material significantly increases the likelihood of getting a passing grade.

What to Take With You
You must bring acceptable identification. If you do not have a valid ID, you will not be allowed to take the exam (no exceptions). The most common forms of identification include a UK driver’s license or passport.
If you don’t have either, you need to provide two alternative forms of identification. These include your EU Country ID card, Trade Union Card, British Armed Forces Card, Credit or Debit Card, National Insurance Card, or the latest statements from your bank.
Additionally, you may click here for a complete list of approved alternative IDs.

Which Test to Take
There are three tests you can take as part of the CSCS Card programme. To help you know which is which, and which test is for you, we've compiled the outlines below.
The Operatives Test is the main test on offer, and indeed the most common. This is the test to take if you’re wanting to obtain a CSCS Green Card (Labourer) or a CSCS Red Card (Provisional). This is suited for General Labourers, Site Operatives, Bricklayers, Joiners, Carpenters, Painters & Decorators, Plasterers, Ground-workers and more.
The Specialists Test is the next level of test on offer and will help you obtain a CSCS Red Card (Trainee, Apprentice or Experienced Worker), CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker) or CSCS Gold Card (Supervisory or Advanced). This is suited for people working in more specialist trades such as plumbing, electrical installation and pipe-fitting.
The Managers or Professionals Test is the next and final level of test available. This test will help you obtain a CSCS Red Card (Technical, Supervisor or Managers), a CSCS White Card (Academically or Professionally Qualified Person) or a CSCS Black Card (Manager).
Your site manager may be able to help you decide which test is right for you, if you are still unsure after reading this information.
Preparing For the Test
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Unfortunately, there are lots of people who fail their tests on the first attempt, having not revised or put in any prep-work.
As with any test or exam, our key advice is that you find time before the big day to revise and read up on the subject matter. It is highly recommended that you buy some good quality revision materials – this investment in your professional development will be worth it.
Other top tips include arriving at the Milton Keynes test centre early, making use of the time you are allocated to get used to the computer software and answering every question in the test – even if you have to guess.
These tests are often underestimated but, by taking the time to prepare and putting yourself in the strongest position possible ahead of your appointment, you can be confident that a CSCS Card will soon be yours.
