The CSCS card is a way to verify that people working on construction sites have the appropriate knowledge and training. This helps prevent on-the-job mishaps that endanger everyone's health and safety. You obtain a CSCS card by taking the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test. Which Test to Take
As we said at the start, a prerequisite for obtaining any type of CSCS Card is that you take and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. But there are 3 different types of CITB tests and more than a dozen types of CSCS Cards. So in order to get the card you're after you need to make sure you take the right test. To help you determine which test you need to sit for we've created the following short guide, which begins with the 3 different types of CITB tests:
The 3 different CITB HS&E tests are:
  • The Operatives Test
  • The Specialist Test
  • The Managers or Professionals Test
Let’s take a closer look at each of these tests.
The Operatives Test
You will need to complete the CITB Operatives Test if you are seeking either of the following CSCS Cards:
  • CSCS Green Card (Labourer)
  • CSCS Red Card (Provisional)
The Specialist Test
The Specialist Test is the next level of CITB Test and must be taken and passed by anyone hoping to obtain one of the following CSCS Cards:
  • CSCS Red Card (Trainee, Apprentice or Experienced Worker)
  • CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker)
  • CSCS Gold Card (Supervisory, Advanced)
The Managers or Professionals Test
If you are seeking a position as a construction manager or supervisor, or you have a particular academic or professional qualification and would like to work in the construction industry, you will need to take the Managers or Professionals Test for any of the following cards:
  • CSCS Red Card (Technical, Supervisor, Managers)
  • CSCS White Card (Academically or Professionally Qualified Person)
  • CSCS Black Card (Manager)
Keep in Mind…
Just as you will need to take the appropriate CITB HS&E Test to obtain the CSCS Card you’re after, each card has other prerequisites that must be satisfied. As these change from card to card there are too many to cover in the limited space we have here. You can, however, visit the official CSCS website where you will find the information you need on each card’s prerequisites.
