CSCS Test Information

To get a CSCS Card you must complete a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test known as the CSCS test. The test takes 45 minutes. It is a multiple choice test with 50 questions. You must get 45 out of 50 to pass. The CSCS test can be taken at over 150 test centres nationwide.

Brief directions

From the exit of Queen Street Station, cross the road and continue straight down North Edward Street. The entrance to 23 Limerick House will be on the left hand side, opposite the Capital car park entrance.
The CSCS card is a way to verify that people working on construction sites have the appropriate knowledge and training. This helps prevent on-the-job mishaps that endanger everyone's health and safety. You obtain a CSCS card by taking the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test. There are 150 CSCS test centres nationwide including in Cardiff.

Since its inception, the CSCS Card has helped make construction sites throughout the UK safer and more productive. If you hope to work in the UK construction industry today a CSCS Card is a virtual must-have. To obtain one you must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Awareness test.
What to Expect in the Test
Expect that you will need to show up on time at the Cardiff Test Centre and show a valid ID. Expect to have your photo taken for security purposes. And expect the test of 50 multiple choice questions to last 45 minutes.
What to Take With You
The only absolute requirement is a valid form of identification. Test centres prefer either a UK driving license or a UK passport that has your photo and signature.
If you don’t have either you can still take the test if you can produce 2 alternative IDs. Acceptable alternative IDs include a Trade Union Card, a bank statement and a British Armed Forces ID. Click here for a full list of acceptable alternate IDs.

How to Determine the Right CSCS Test For You
Having a CSCS Card is not legally required, but if you do not have one, you can forget about getting any significant work in the UK construction industry.
Every card has its own set of prerequisites, but there is one thing common to them all: you must take and pass the CITB health, safety and environment test in order to obtain any type of CSCS Card.
There are, however, 3 different levels of CITB test and more than a dozen types of CSCS Cards. So how do you know which test is right for the card you’re after? To clarify things for you we’ve created the following short guide that will help you determine which CITB test to sit for.
As we mentioned there are 3 levels of CITB test, they are:
  1. The Operatives Test
  2. The Specialist Test
  3. The Managers or Professionals Test
Let’s look at all 3. Operatives first.
The Operatives Test
If you are hoping to obtain a Provisional Red Card in order to secure temporary work on a UK construction either for academic or professional reasons you will need to take the Operatives Test. Likewise, if you are hoping to get a CSCS Green Card to work as a construction labourer in the UK you will need to take the Operatives Test. Above we provided a link where you can purchase some quality revision aids for this test. We strongly recommend you do so.
The Specialist Test
Those looking for a Blue Card (Skilled Workers), Red Card (Experienced Worker, Apprentice or Trainee), or a Gold Card (Supervisory) will need to take the Specialist Test. This is a more difficult test than the standard Operatives Test so you’ll need to spend time on revision beforehand.
The Managers or Professionals Test
Anyone seeking a CSCS Black Card (Managerial), Red Card (Technical, Supervisory or Managerial), or White Card (Academic or Professional) in Cardiff will have to sit for the Managers or Professionals Test. We suggest you visit the official CSCS website to find out which prerequisites are needed for this and other cards.
